All humans are subject to death at one time or another.    Genesis 2–3 in the bible  tell us that death entered the world because of sin.  God created our first parents with the ability to live forever.  But they sinned by disobeying his command and came under the penalty of death by that sinning.   Adam and Eve became subject to physical death.God had told them they could not eat fruit off the tree of life which was there  in the Garden of Eden.  After Adam and Eve ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil,  God said, “For dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Gen. 3:19.)

They did not physically die on that day that they ate the fruit, but they became subject to the law of death as the result of God’s curse that he put on them for disobeying Him.  Adam and Eve also died a moral death.  In Gen. 2:17, God warned Adam that, if he ate of that forbidden fruit, he would die.  Though they did not die physically on that day, they did die morally; their nature became sinful.  Every person born since then has been born with a sinful nature (Romans 8:5-8.)    That means they have a desire to his or her own way w/o cocern for for God or anybody.  They died a spiritual death when they disobeyed God.  They did not have the intimate relationship afterwards that they had before.

Death as a result of that sin means eternal death.  Eternal death is eternal condemnation and separation from God.  Genesis 3:4 says,” …”punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord.”  But Jesus and His death reconciled us with God.  By His resurrection, he broke the power of Satan, sin, and physical death.  A part of the testimony of God’s Old Testament people can be seen in Job 19:25, 26 and Psalm 16:9-11.
